Upon taking the task to implement SEAL for fifth grade, Ms. Loyola and Ms. Duran have developed curriculum utilizing SEAL and Project Based Learning strategies. Planning and design was at the forefront of their innovation as they married two foundational models in order to deliver lessons that are highly engaging, strongly aligned with the standards, and relevant to their students’ lives. They recognized that leveraging both of these complimentary learning concepts, students gain valuable insight and learning through their use of presentations and creating models, resulting in group engagement and strong class collaboration. Both Ms. Loyola’s and Ms. Duran’s recognition of the impact delivering a collaborative model within the classroom gave them the confidence to seek an alternative approach to learning within their first year of the program’s implementation. Their ability to challenge the conventional approach is exemplary and models the spirit of innovation.
